In recent years, African Americans have started coming back into the racing world. Kevin Krigger is a 29 year old passionate African American jockey hoping to become the next African American Kentucky Derby winner since Jimmy Winkfield in 1902. He hopes to accomplish similar goals as his idol notable Isaac Murphy.

Kevin will be the first black jockey to ride in the Derby since Marlon St. Julien in 2000. Kevin appreciates the significance of being a black jockey, however he does not want that to define who he is as a jockey. Although he feels that he does not get offered as many "mounts" as he should, he is working his way to the top after his win in the Preakness and his ride in the Kentucky Derby. He did not go home with a win, but he is determined to make history for his African American culture
